Simple single level shifter set up to easily supply addressable LEDs, servos, and other things with 5V when using a 3.3V microcontroller. This device is tiny, with outer dimensions of 10.5mm wide x 13mm long, and shifts a 3.3V signal into 5V via a connected 5V supply.


For Addressable LEDs


The design roughly matches the dimensions of a WS2812B strip, and if you tin the strip, then align the PCB's half-holes, it acts as a soldering jig. Complete the connection with heat shrink and you have a nice secure attachment to your strip, ensuring a good ~5V signal.


BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! The device features a inline 330 ohm resistor inline on the signal, which is generally recommended (but often neglected) when working with these devices. So it has (most) everything you need to get your addressable strip connected securely to and maintain a proper signal.*



For Servos


You can also use this with servos if you want a nice clean 5V signal versus the 3.3V signal straight outta compton your microcontroller. Whether this is actually necessary is debatable, but the option is there if you need it. ALSO, the non-split thru-holes are patterned after a standard servo connector: signal-5V-gnd, so it's very easy to hook up once header pins are soldered on.


For other 3.3V to 5V conversions


You know. Other stuff where you need 5V, not 3.3V. And where you just need one of these signals or it's convenient to break out multiple such signals with small individual PCBs. Order multiples of this product, and you will indeed receive multiples in the mail at some point in the future... and my appreciation for helping to fund my electronics experimentation and Costco trips.



*Caveats and Considerations


  1. A capacitor is also often recommended for addressable LED power supply, but you're on your ohm here.
  2. The boards come with SMD parts assembled, but with no header pins, heat shrink, LEDs, etc.
  3. Note the half-holes may have some extra conductor left over after processing. Inspect this, and knock any burrs off with a file and/or your fingernails.
  4. The outer, half-hole, pinout matches a typical addressable LED pinout. The inner, full holes, match a typical hobby servo pinout. Don't get these confused or short them together!
  5. Yes, you can get level shifter breakout boards quite a bit cheaper elsewhere. However, I don't think there is anything available that integrates so nicely (solder and resistor-wise) with addressable LED strips and/or that matches servo connectors.
