Arduino Compatible Infrared Decoder V2.5
Infrared Remote Control Decoder & IR Widget
Instantly Decode Infrared Remote Controls
Have you ever wanted to identify the commands transmitted by an infrared remote without digging through pages of raw timing data? This Infrared Remote Control Decoder makes it simple.
Point your remote at the decoder, press a button, and instantly see the Device ID and Command displayed on your PC. No complicated decoding, no manual bit manipulation—just the information you need. Best of all, the decoder can also function as a standard IR Widget, making it compatible with popular free IR analysis software. Similar to my other decoder here, except this one is Arduino compatible just by adding a capacitor to the board and programming the bootloader. For this you will need an AVR programmer.
Two Operating Modes
Terminal Mode (Recommended)
Terminal Mode is designed for speed and simplicity.
Using any serial terminal program (such as Tera Term) at 115200 baud, simply:
- Connect the decoder to your PC's USB port.
- Select the IR protocol.
- Point your remote at the receiver.
- Press any button.
The decoder immediately displays the Device ID and Command for the button you pressed.
No waveform analysis. No confusing binary data.
Just the decoded information you actually need.
Create a log file in your terminal program and build a complete backup of your favorite remotes in minutes.
IR Widget Mode
Install jumper J2 and the decoder becomes an IR Widget, compatible with various free IR analysis applications. This allows you to capture complete IR transmissions for advanced analysis and reverse engineering when needed.
Why I Designed It
While experimenting with infrared decoding, I found that many example programs simply display the incoming bits exactly as they are received. Unfortunately, many IR protocols transmit data Least Significant Bit (LSB) first, making the displayed values difficult—or even incorrect—to interpret. This decoder performs the bit reordering internally, presenting the correct Device ID and Command values instead of forcing you to decode them yourself. The result is cleaner, more useful output that simply works.
Supported Protocols
This decoder currently supports:
- NEC1
- NEC2
- REC80
- RECS80
- Dish Network
- Sony 12-bit
- TDC-38
- RC5
- RC6
Two Display Levels
Basic Mode
Displays only the information most users need:
- Device ID
- Command
Advanced (Expert) Mode
Displays all decoded information transmitted by the remote, making it ideal for developers, reverse engineers, and electronics enthusiasts.
