R60ABD1 - 60GHz mmWave Sleep Monitoring Radar Module Kit for Vital Sign & Sleep Tracking
Product Description
What is it?
The R60ABD1 is a 60GHz millimeter-wave (mmWave) Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar module designed for non-contact sleep monitoring and vital sign detection. It detects breathing rate, heart rate, body movement, bed occupancy, and sleep status (awake/light/deep sleep) through blankets, clothing, and thin bedding β without any physical contact or wearables.
The module outputs all detection data via UART serial communication (115200bps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity), making it easy to integrate with popular MCUs such as Arduino, STM32, ESP32, and STC series microcontrollers.
Physical Dimensions: The module measures approximately 50mm Γ 28mm (standard 2.54mm pitch pin header) and features a compact form factor suitable for embedding into bedside devices, smart home hubs, or custom enclosures.
Key Features
- Non-Contact Detection β Detects breathing and heartbeat through blankets, clothing, and duvets; no need to wear or attach anything during sleep.
- Dual Detection Modes β Real-time mode for quick functional testing and Sleep mode (default) for comprehensive overnight monitoring with detailed sleep analysis.
- Rich Data Output β Provides breathing rate (0β45/min, typical 10β25/min), heart rate (50β120/min, typical 60β100/min), body movement intensity (0β100), bed in/out status, sleep staging (awake/light/deep), sleep duration, sleep quality score (0β100), and sleep quality rating (poor/fair/good).
- Advanced Features β Generates a detailed Sleep Quality Analysis Report at the end of each sleep session, including total sleep time, time distribution across sleep stages, bed exit count, turnover count, average respiration, and average heart rate.
- Anomaly Alerts β Supports sleep abnormality detection (insufficient/excessive sleep, prolonged absence during sleep), struggle detection, and unattended duration monitoring (configurable via UART commands).
- Immunity to Environmental Interference β Unlike ultrasonic or infrared sensors, this 60GHz radar operates reliably regardless of temperature, humidity, noise, airflow, dust, or lighting conditions. It can detect micro-movements caused by breathing and heartbeat even when the person is completely still.
- Compact and Easy to Integrate β Simple 6-pin interface (5V, GND, RX, TX, GP1, GP2) with 3.3V TTL UART levels. Works with any 3.3V or 5V UART-enabled MCU.
- Privacy Protected β No camera, no images, no cloud dependency β all data stays local on your device.

What's in the Box
Your kit includes everything you need to start receiving radar data right out of the box:
- 1Γ R60ABD1 60GHz mmWave Sleep Monitoring Radar Module (pins pre-soldered)
- 1Γ USB-to-TTL Serial Adapter (plug-and-play, compatible with Windows/macOS/Linux)
- 1Γ Set of Dupont Jumper Wires (female-to-female, pre-cut and ready to use)
That's it β no need to hunt down additional components or cables. Simply connect the radar module to the USB-to-TTL adapter using the included Dupont wires, plug the adapter into your computer's USB port, and you're ready to receive data.
Important Wiring Note: When connecting the radar module to the USB-to-TTL adapter, the TX and RX pins must be cross-connected:
- Radar TX β USB-to-TTL RX
- Radar RX β USB-to-TTL TX
This is a common step that is easy to overlook. If you see no data or garbled output, double-check that the TX/RX connections are crossed correctly.
No soldering, no complicated wiring β just four jumper connections and you're live.
Documentation and Resources
Comprehensive documentation is included:
- User Manual β Complete UART protocol specification, frame structure, all query/set commands (over 20+ function points), OTA update instructions, and command generation examples.
- Quick Start Guide β Installation instructions, pinout diagram, testing procedures, and troubleshooting tips.
All documentation and source code for the debugging software are available for download via the "Source Code / Documentation" link on this listing. (You do not need to contact us externally β simply access the linked resources directly.)
Use Cases
- Smart Home Integration β Build a smart bedroom system that automatically adjusts lighting, HVAC, or music based on sleep status.
- Elderly Care Monitoring β Monitor breathing patterns, bed exits, and prolonged absence events for remote caregiver alerts.
- Sleep Quality Research β Collect objective sleep data for wellness studies and personal health tracking.
- DIY Health Devices β Create custom non-contact vital sign monitors for development and prototyping.
- Academic and Educational Projects β Ideal for university research labs, engineering students, and makers exploring radar-based sensing.
Mounting Guide
For optimal performance, install the module:
- Location: Above the bed headboard
- Height: 0.8β1.0m above the mattress surface
- Angle: 30β45Β° downward tilt toward the sleeping area
- Coverage: Ensure the 40Β° Γ 40Β° beam covers the torso region
- Obstructions: Avoid metallic objects, thick metal-containing materials, or liquid-filled objects directly in front of the antenna
